WELCOME
TO THE CHOICE FOUNDATION!
The Choice Foundation, a nonprofit corporation, was founded by Jim Huger in 2004 to promote school choice issues in Louisiana. Following Hurricane Katrina, the foundation applied for a Recovery School District charter, and was awarded the charter for Lafayette Academy. The school currently has 780 children in grades Pre-K - 7. In June of 2010 The Choice Foundation was awarded the Charter for Esperanza a Charter School that was failing to reach its potential. Esperanza has 350 kids in grades K-8.
Following a disastrous start with Mosaica Education an Education Management Company, the Choice Foundation brought in Veteran Educator Charles "Mickey" Landry to lead Lafayette Academy.
The Choice Foundations mission is to promote school choice initiatives in Louisiana. The ultimate promotion of school choice is to demonstrate that school choice results in better schools. The Choice Foundation is the chartering body for Lafayette Academy a Pre K through 7th grade school in New Orleans. The Foundation is dedicating all of its energy to provide management expertise and resources to allow Lafayette Academy and it's newest school Esperanza to fulfill its mission to "prepare its students for success in a college preparatory high school in an atmosphere that challenges and supports each student to achieve his or her highests potential."
LAFAYETTE
ACADEMY
To date our results have been impressive. Lafayette's 4th graders, for example, are one of the few classes in the city to have 100% of its students pass the high stakes LEAP test. In 2007, the year Mosaica ran the school, that same figure was only 62%. The entire school's School Performance Score has risen from 36.2 to 63.8 in those two years. Results such as these are rare for a turnaround of a full school, particularly one with such a high rate of free and reduced lunch students.
