OUR
HISTORY WITH MOSACIA EDUCATION
In the beginning
when the Choice Foundation chose to apply for a Charter
School we recognized that we did not have the expertise
to operate the school. Choice,
as with most governing boards was to be the policy setting
body, deferring day to day operations to education professionals. Mosaica
a large education management company with over 90 programs
across the country came highly recommended by many education
choice advocates across the country. With short timelines,
and in hindsight, poor due diligence, the board hired Mosacia
to a five year contract to manage the school. Mosaica
among other things promised a private school education under
a charter structure. After a very chaotic opening, which
can be explained due to the conditions in which the school
was forced to open it quickly became apparent that Mosaca,
which sold itself as a model school structure and program
that needed only to be implemented was no such thing. We
were reinventing the wheel at every turn. The head of
school was not trained or supervised by Mosaica. When
problems arose, they were not identified and rectified, they
festered for Mosaica had no depth of management to identify,
prevent, or solve problems. Their management model is
based on hiring a good head of school; when this head
fails, there is no back up plan, no organization to pick up
the pieces.
The Board of Choice put Mosaica in default in October after
many warnings of problems had gone un-solved. This default
was retracted, when it appeared Mosaica was serious about putting
resources at Lafayette. This effort by them was shallow
and short. It became apparent in the second semester
that despite our pleas Mosaica was not capable of running our
school. We told them to remove the head of school, and
the regional vice President of the school following a theft
incident that was not investigated at the school. Shortly
after we put them in default again, which contractually gave
them 30 days to remedy the problems at the school. When
it was clear that the problems were not going to be resolved
we terminated our contract with Mosaica, which termination
was decided in September 2007.The arbitrator ruled that Choice
was valid in its right to terminate Mosaica for cause and gave
Choice $350,000 in damages, plus court cost.

CHOICE
PRE-HEARING BRIEF
As we move forward without Mosaica in our 07/08 school year
we are very excited about the future. The school has
hired a top notch Head of School, Mr. Mickey Landry who is
tasked with the simple mission: Lafayette Academy prepares
its students for success in a college preparatory high school
in an atmosphere that challenges and supports each student
to achieve his or her highest potential. We plan on having
a very different year with an organization that can support
our teachers, and provide the resources to fulfill our goals.
